The IC Spec Ion Chamber has been specially designed for high precision X-ray intensity measurements at Synchrotrons and is particularly suited for transmission X-ray absorption spectroscopy measurements such as EXAFS or XANES. It has a large installed base and has undergone extensive testing on beamlines worldwide; it has been shown, at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility, that it is capable of measuring EXAFS spectra with signal to noise ratio 1:10000.
IC Spec Ion Chamber
The IC Spec Ionisation Chamber consists of a Vacuum / Pressure vessel, evacuated and back-filled with a rare gas, fitted in-line to a synchrotron beamline. X-rays enter and leave the chamber via thin Kapton windows at either end of the vessel.
The X-rays pass between two flat plate electrodes, one held at -3 kV and one floating, causing ion-electron pairs to be formed in the gas, the electric field between the plates causes the free electrons to drift towards the floating electrode and hence a small current flow.
The magnitude of the current flow depends upon X-ray intensity, chamber gas type, chamber gas pressure, electric field and contamination within the chamber.
The Ionisation Chamber is designed to operate at a range of 0.5 to 2 Bar absolute. (0.5 to +1 bar relative to atmospheric pressure).

Gridded IC Spec Ion Chamber
The IC Spec Gridded Ionisation Chamber includes an intermediate grid which sits between the beam path and the ground electrode.
The electric field between the plates causes the free electrons to quickly drift towards the floating electrode, while the intermediate negative potential on the grid prevents the drifting of the slower ions to the negative electrode. The overall effect is a quick response to subtle variations in the X-ray beam intensity allowing a high acquisition rate.
